i’m a writer
about me
I’m an author, journalist, and (God help me) YouTuber, currently based in Mexico City and Bogotá but also at home in beautiful Nairobi. As a foreign correspondent, I try to amplify voices and stories that surprise me. I’m particularly interested in women’s issues, consent, decriminalization, bodily autonomy, and children’s rights.
My critically-acclaimed first book, SEX WITH SHAKESPEARE, was released by HarperCollins/William Morrow in April 2016. It is taught at colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada and was optioned for development by Warner Brothers.
My reported features, opinion columns, and essays have appeared in the New York Times, New Yorker, Washington Post, The Guardian, Slate, Foreign Policy, TIME, The American Prospect, Marie Claire, The Atlantic, Reason, The Daily Beast, Al Jazeera America, Scientific American, Pacific Standard, Playboy, and elsewhere.
I am a 2016 Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting grantee, a 2013 International Reporting Project fellow, and a 2010-2011 Fulbright Scholar.
I have reported from Kenya, Somalia, Kazakhstan, Niger, the Philippines, Burundi, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Senegal, Madagascar, Cuba, and the United Kingdom. I’m also a Pacific Crest Trail and Arizona Trail thru-hiker and proud servant to three beautiful cats.
